FOAM-X: Acoustic material characterization software ▶

Description

FOAM-X converts impedance tube measurements into the physical parameters your simulations need. Working from porous, fibrous, perforated, or fabric materials, it applies established acoustic models to recover a complete, accurate set of inputs, then hands them off to platforms like NOVA, VA One, COMSOL, and Hexagon. It is the bridge between what you measure in the lab and what you simulate on screen.

Key features

Complete parameter extraction

Recover:

✓ Open porosity (ϕ)
✓ Static airflow resistivity (σ)
✓ Tortuosity (α∞)
✓ Thermal and viscous characteristic lengths (Λ′ and Λ)
✓ Static thermal permeability (ko′)
✓ Young’s modulus (E)
✓ Poisson’s ratio (v)
✓ Structural loss factor (damping) (η)

Centralized workflow

Each FOAM-X project bundles in one place:

✓ Raw measurements
✓ Identified model parameters
✓ Acoustic performance predictions
✓ Sensitivity analysis
✓ Collaboration notes and annotations

Multiple acoustic models

JCA, JCA-Lafarge, the full Biot poroelastic model, plus specialized models for perforated plates and fabrics, several exclusive to FOAM-X.

Flexible data handling

Import from various impedance tube types and geometries, combine datasets for accuracy, load full impedance tube projects or paste from Excel.

Robust characterization

Fix known properties to guide inverse modeling, replicate test conditions, and include uncertainty quantification for reliable results.

Sensitivity analysis

Identify the most critical parameters as a function of frequency, so you know where accuracy matters most.
